Dressage Rule Changes Effective April 1, 2025

The US Equestrian Board of Directors approved several rule changes for dressage that take effect April 1, 2025.  A summary of the rule changes is noted below. The complete list can be found here.

DR306.3: Updating the Dress rules for Para athletes to reflect the current FEI rules. At the national level, Para riders compete in FEI tests and aligning the USEF national rules with the FEI Dress rules will avoid confusion amongst our riders.

DR120.5 - Dress: Electronic Communication Devices – adding language that only one earphone or similar device is permitted while mounted or while lunging. This language is consistent with the FEI rules, which permit only one earphone or similar device during training or warmup.

DR104.5 - The Trot: To eliminate confusion to clarify that sitting trot is required, especially in the FEI Four-Year-Old tests.

Revised Warning Card System Effective April 1, 2025

During the 2025 Annual Meeting, the US Equestrian Board of Directors approved amendments to GR1037 (formerly titled Yellow Warning Card System – Stewards and Technical Delegates). This revised rule will go into effect on April 1, 2025.

The Warning Card System rule was amended to encourage and empower judges, stewards, and technical delegates to address conduct as it happens and correct behavior that should not be repeated.  As part of the revision of this rule, USEF focused on clarity and flexibility by streamlining the existing Yellow Warning Card process and adding a Recorded Warning process to provide a mechanism for addressing less egregious behavior.

The goal of the revised warning system is to have conduct addressed and documented immediately, be it an infraction that rises to the level of a Yellow Warning Card or is less severe and warrants a Recorded Warning.

For the full text and updates of the rule, see GR1037.  An implementation guide can be found here.
